La finalidad es que los diseñadores gráficos y directores de arte dejemos algún día de perder el tiempo redibujando una y otra vez lo que otros ya han hecho, y dediquemos ese tiempo a crear, descansar o tomar unas cervezas con los amigos.

De hecho, existen muchos otros programas de dibujo vectorial, algunos de ellos francamente buenos, en especial para el sistema operativo de Apple, Mac OS X. De casualidad me encontré con una lista en un un  sitio japonés en la que figuraban algunos de ellos, pero también otros de los que no había oído hablar. Destacan algunos programas para Mac OS X con especial cuidado en la interfaz de usuario y la potencia gráfica que saca partido al motor gráfico de ese sistema operativo y sus efectos.

Drawberry es un programa para el Mac, actualmente en desarrollo, que puedes descargar y utilizar de forma gratuita. Es rápido y sencillo, de manera que es una alternativa para proyectos simples o dibujos que quieras empezar rápidamente.

Lineform es un programa comercial, sólo para Mac OS X, de interfaz simple y cuidada, pero tiene todo lo necesario para crear ilustraciones vectoriales sofisticadas. Incluye pinceles a medida.

VectorDesigner (para Mac OS X) ofrece un entorno simple y cuidado para crear ilustraciones vectoriales de forma eficiente.

Otro programa para Mac: Eazydraw. Su interfaz no es tan cuidada como la de otros programas similares, pero ofrece todo lo necesario para trabajar de forma eficiente en dibujo vectorial en el Mac, a un precio muy competitivo. Su punto fuerte son las herramientas para el dibujo técnico, con algunas funciones realmente avanzadas.

DrawIt es un programa simple para dibujo vectorial, creado por el mismo desarrollador de Fontcase. Aprovecha los efectos gráficos de CoreImage, y puede aplicarlos de forma secuencial a un elemento de la ilustración. De nuevo, un programa exclusivo para Mac OS X.

iDraw pronto estará disponible para el Mac OS X. De momento es una aplicación para dibujar en la pantalla táctil de los iPad, iPod touch o iPhone.

Wouldjadraw es un programa de dibujo vectorial económico, rápido y sencillo que ofrece la funcionalidad básica para el dibujo vectorial.

Intaglio, otro programa exclusivo para Mac, es intuitivo y simple, pero potente. Saca mucho partido a la automatización de tareas mediante Automator y AppleScript y tiene un punto fuerte en los filtros y efectos. Existe una aplicación hermana para iPod / iPhone / iPad llamada Intaglio sketchbook, para crear bocetos que después puedes acabar de desarrollar en el programa del ordenador.

WebInk es el servicio de tipografías para la web de Symantec, desarrollador de Suitcase y otras aplicaciones de gestión de tipografías y recursos digitales.

Esta tecnología se está implantando a gran velocidad y sin duda aparecerá algún otro servicio en los próximos meses. Es un mercado en cambio muy rápido y habrá que seguirle la pista, por ejemplo a través del portal webfonts.info.

No olvidemos que también podemos experimentar con algunas tipografías para la web de forma completamente gratuita, por ejemplo con la utilidad que nos proporciona Font Squirrel, comentado aquí anteriormente.

Aunque no soy muy aficionado (o nada, la verdad) a los pasatiempos, a menudo me piden que proporcione pistas sobre sitios web o programas descargables. Hay un sitio en especial que debo recomendar, la colección de puzzles portables de Simon Tatham; es extraordinaria. Ha ido desarrollando toda una serie de entretenimientos matemáticos: geométricos, de números, topológicos… que pueden descargarse y utilizarse en cualquier máquina (sea cual sea el sistema operativo que utilices). Cada juego dispone de manual e instrucciones y se pueden descargar todos ellos o sólo los deseados.

Por cierto, para los adictos a Sudoku, nada mejor que la aplicación que viene ya instalada en Ubuntu. Permite generar automáticamente un librillo imprimible con el número de puzzles sudoku que desees, con el grado de dificultad deseado (de fácil a imposible, 4 grados).

Synfig es una alternativa opensource a Flash: una aplicación potente y avanzada para crear animaciones 2D vectoriales. Se ha desarrollado para crear animación de calidad profesional aprovechando al máximo las cualidades de la producción digital para optimizar los recursos y depender de un mínimo de personal y materiales.

Este programa funciona en múltiples sistemas operativos. Para instalar Synfig en tu Linux-Ubuntu basta que vayas al gestor de instalación de programas, el centro de software de Ubuntu. También hay archivos binarios para ejecutarlo / instalarlo en Windows, Mac OS X y otras distribuciones de Linux.

MyPaint es una aplicación ligera y rápida para Linux (Ubuntu incluído) que permite sacar mucho partido a la tableta digitalizadora, por ejemplo una Wacom. Es un programa de código abierto para pintura digital que ofrece funciones más básicas que otros programas más ambiciosos, pero por este mismo motivo puedes concentrarte en crear arte digital más que en moverte por los miles de opciones de los menús, o en apartar ventanas flotantes que estorban.

Para ver el programa en acción, nada mejor que ver algunas de las capturas de pantalla de MyPaint. Se puede descargar o (si utilizas Ubuntu) instalar de la forma más cómoda, mediante el centro de software.

MyPaint incorpora una gran colección de pinceles, que incluyen imitaciones bastante logradas de carboncillo, tinta y otras técnicas tradicionales, pero puedes crear y experimentar con los pinceles para conseguir exactamente lo que quieras. El programa cuenta con ayuda en forma de tutorial de inicio y también un Wiki.

Tiene muchas opciones avanzadas y herramientas de edición sofisticadas y puedes utilizarlo en cualquier ordenador conectado a internet. Aquí está una improvisación que hice con el programa, simplemente con dos tipos de pinceles y usando el ratón.

La interfaz gráfica de Sumopaint está basada, claramente, en la de Photoshop. Resulta intuitivo y la calidad de sus herramientas es indudable, en especial sus pinceles que te permiten pintar directamente, imitando técnicas tradicionales  de tinta, óleo…

Otros servicios similares para edición avanzada de imágenes y/o pintura digital online:

• Pixlr, también te hará pensar que editas la imagen en Photoshop.

Aquí está una captura del excelente pixlr, un editor rápido y avanzado que tiene una interfaz similar a Photoshop. Dispone de funciones avanzadas, incluso diferentes modos de fusión para las capas y máscaras de capa.

Uno de los proyectos recogidos en esta peculiar colección de fuentes tipográficas es DLF (dingbats liberation fest), con 4 archivos. Propone volver a dibujar varios símbolos y caracteres Dingbats de la lista de Unicode.

Los diversos signos Dingbats y son parte de algo que podríamos llamar un bien común. Estos símbolos se han infiltrado en la mayoría de nuestros equipos informáticos. Son parte de los diferentes sistemas de escritura, tanto como el alfabeto romano. Después de los dos primeros talleres en Bruselas y Utrecht, en noviembre y diciembre de 2009, un montón de personajes ya viven en esta fuente.
