Todo sobre Amazon Kindle

Kindle, el lector de libros electrónicos de Amazon, ha sido sin duda la estrella de la pasada temporada de Navidades. La aparición del nuevo modelo, junto con su disponibilidad directa en España han le han asegurado un enorme éxito. La revolución del libro digital toma impulso.

El nuevo modelo prescinde del teclado que tenía la versión anterior (que todavía no se podía adquirir directamente en España) y tiene un tamaño de almacenamiento algo inferior, por un precio muy aceptable: 99€. Estoy acostumbrado a ese modelo y, la verdad, si te gusta realizar anotaciones frecuentes o utilizar mucho tu Kindle para buscar contenido en la red, se puede echar de menos el pequeño teclado en la parte inferior.

Por otra parte, el tamaño en el reciente modelo es algo menor, con lo que funciona mejor como libro de bolsillo y tiene un diseño más refinado. Entre las muchas cosas que me gustan del Kindle:

un tamaño muy manejable y fácil de llevar a todas partes (15 cm de largo y menos de 1 cm de grueso, como un libro de bolsillo),
ligereza ( 170 gramos),
autonomía (hasta un mes de duración de la carga de batería),
conectividad wifi (o wifi + 3G) para descargar libros e interactuar con redes sociales,
facilidad de uso, capacidad (¡cerca de 1500 libros!),
resolución del texto y comodidad de lectura…

Veamos algunas de estas características con algo más de detalle:

Es importante entender que Kindle no tiene una pantalla al uso como las de móviles, tabletas y monitores, sino una pantalla de tinta electrónica o e-Ink. Una tecnología totalmente diferente con unas ventajas únicas. Es como si se imprimiera instantáneamente cada página, a una resolución mucho más alta de lo que alcanzan los monitores actuales: los caracteres se pueden leer con una nitidez equiparable a la de una buena impresión. El cambio de página en Kindle es muy rápido. Una serie de impulsos electrónicos mueven partículas de tinta blancas y negras para conseguir la calidad óptima en el texto y las imágenes.

Además, la luz no se transmite a través de la pantalla, sino que leemos a partir de la luz reflejada, como si fuera un papel impreso. Esto es mucho más natural y castiga menos la vista que una fuente de luz transmitida como el monitor tradicional. Por este motivo, leer a plena luz del Sol o bajo una fuente de luz potente no sólo es posible (a diferencia de un iPad, por ejemplo) sino que, de hecho, es preferible a la oscuridad. ¡Si estamos en la oscuridad completa no se puede leer nada! Muchos usuarios de Kindle aprovechan una pequeña lámpara portátil de lectura a pilas para leer cómodamente en la cama, en un tren nocturno o en el avión. A diferencia de un portátil, el Kindle no desprende calor. De esta forma, puedes leer sin problema durante todo el tiempo que quieras.

Kindle se puede conectar con un cable USB o mediante Wifi al ordenador para añadir o quitar contenido a su memoria interna de almacenamiento de 2GB. Esta capacidad es evidentemente limitada y no admitiría mucho contenido si se tratara de documentos con muchos gráficos, ni tampoco si queremos almacenar música. Pero si utilizamos Kindle para lo que hace bien —leer libros de texto simple— su capacidad es muy grande: puede llegar a los 1400 libros. Leyendo un libro cada cuatro días tendríamos para leer durante quince años…

Es algo limitado en cuanto a los formatos de ebook que admite (formato nativo AZW y Mobi, puede convertir ficheros de texto y RTF). También incorpora un navegador web básico y un lector de pdf. Ahora bien, lo ideal es leer texto con un mínimo de formato: lo que encontramos habitualmente en una novela, ensayo, libro de poesía… Estos documentos ocupan relativamente poco espacio y se pueden convertir sin problemas de un formato a otro. Los formatos de lectura compatibles son exactamente: Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, MOBI sin protección y PRC en su formato original; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP por conversión. Así, si tenemos algún libro en un formato incompatible con el lector de Kindle se puede realizar una simple conversión, por ejemplo desde el formato .epub (muy popular) o .fb2. Estas conversiones las realiza muy bien el programa Calibre que ya comentamos aquí anteriormente.

Los libros que se pueden adquirir (o descargar gratuitamente) se cuentan por miles y se pueden conseguir tanto en el propio sitio de Amazon, cuya tienda Kindle funciona especialmente bien en el navegador del dispositivo, o en otros archivos. Existen innumerables clásicos en distintos idiomas ya disponibles. Además puedes transferir tu propio contenido. Por ejemplo, notas que hayas tomado en tu ordenador, fragmentos de consulta en la web, artículos, páginas web tomadas a partir de sumarios RSS… las fuentes de contenido pueden ser tan diversas como quieras.

Es muy habitual que cuando leemos efectuemos diferentes anotaciones o pongamos marcadores en diferentes partes del libro. Con Kindle es fácil añadir notas a tus libros con el teclado virtual que aparece justo cuando lo necesitas. También se puede marcar o “subrayar” uno de los pasajes clave y marcar las páginas que quieras utilizar en el futuro. Cada libro queda en la última página leída, y si utilizan el mismo Kindle diferentes usuarios, cada uno se encontrará su libro en el punto en que lo dejó. Se puede compartir las citas preferidas a través de las redes sociales Twitter y Facebook, y ver cuántas anotaciones han realizado otros lectores sobre el mismo libro.

Además de libros que ha producido una editorial u otras personas, el e-reader Kindle te da la posibilidad de llevar tus documentos personales a todas partes sin necesidad de imprimirlos. Tú y los contactos a los que otorgues autorización podréis enviar por e-mail documentos de Word, PFD, texto o imágenes directamente a tu Kindle y leerlos en el dispositivo. Los documentos se almacenarán en tu biblioteca Kindle para que los puedas descargar fácilmente en cualquier parte y en cualquier momento. Obviamente, estos documentos también pueden contar con anotaciones, subrayados y marcadores que se sincronizarán en todos los dispositivos, gracias a la tecnología Whispersync, y además siempre recuerda la última página leída de cada documento.
El navegador web de Kindle facilita el encontrar lo que buscas en la red. Sólo tienes que introducir una palabra o una frase y Kindle buscará en tu biblioteca Kindle, en la Tienda Kindle, en Wikipedia o en la web a través de la búsqueda de Google.

Si conectamos Kindle a internet podemos descargar libros gratuitos o adquirirlos en la tienda de ebooks de Amazon. Muchos libros comerciales cuentan con una versión limitada para probar, por ejemplo, el primer capítulo de la obra.

Para gestionar tu biblioteca, puedes organizar los libros en diversas colecciones. Así, por ejemplo, puedes tener diferentes carpetas según la temática o épocas, o también una carpeta para cada usuario. El programa que ofrece Amazon (también llamado Kindle, disponible para pc, mac y diferentes móviles) para gestionar tu Kindle y tu biblioiteca está bien, pero es muy preferible en mi opinión utilizar Calibre, una magnífica aplicación opensource con muchas más prestaciones.

El diccionario está disponible en cualquier momento. Basta con desplazar el cursor delante de una palabra para que aparezca su definición en la parte inferior de la pantalla de Kindle. Si queremos ver la definición completa, pulsando el botón principal iremos a la página del diccionario con las diferentes acepciones de la palabra y ejemplos de uso. Esta utilidad está muy indicada para utilizar un diccionario de otro idioma. Ofrece diccionarios en español, francés, inglés, alemán, italiano y portugués brasileño.

Kindle viene listo para usar. No es preciso configurarlo previamente con un ordenador, ni lo necesita para transferir contenido, puesto que puede hacerlo por wifi. Sin embargo, si se quiere aprovechar un programa de lectura de ebooks en un ordenador u otros dispositivos, Kindle sincronizará la lectura entre todos ellos. Incluye como documentación una Guía de inicio rápido (impresa, incluida en la caja), más una Guía del usuario de Kindle (preinstalada en el e-reader).

Se puede disfrutar de una lectura cómoda con ocho tamaños y tres estilos de fuente diferentes, con lo que se pueden elegir todas las combinaciones posibles de estas variantes. Además, se puede modificar el interlineado y el espaciado entre caracteres para conseguir la lecturabilidad que consideremos óptima.

Kindle tiene varios detalles de diseño ergonónico, como el incluir botones a ambos lados del dispositivo para pasar las páginas cómodamente sin importar la posición en la que se lea. Viene con un botón de navegación multidireccional muy fácil de usar que permite subrayar o buscar palabras de forma precisa y sin dejar huellas en la pantalla. La orientación de la visualización puede cambiarse a voluntad de vertical a horizontal para leer mapas, gráficos y tablas más fácilmente.

Para que cada lector elija el modo de lectura más confortable, Kindle permite diferentes combinaciones de tipo de letra, tamaño y espaciado.

Además de Kindle en sí, están disponibles numerosos accesorios, entre los que destacan las fundas de diversos materiales, las lámparas de lectura en miniatura y los cargadores / adaptadores a red eléctrica. Todo ello disponible en la tienda Kindle:

Comentábamos hace un tiempo que la aplicación de dibujo vectorial para iPad / iPhone, iDraw, pronto estaría disponible también para Mac OS X. Esta versión está ya disponible, en la App Store. La aplicación ha sido creada específicamente para el sistema operativo del Mac, y aprovecha nativamente las ventajas de este. La pareja iPad / Mac es ideal para trabajar en diferentes momentos y desarrollar las imágenes con la pantalla táctil del iPad por una parte, y las potentes herramientas de edición del ordenador por otra.

Este programa, desarrollado por indeeo, ofrece herramientas básicas para la creación y edición de ilustraciones vectoriales. Es una aplicación ligera que se carga rápidamente. Bajo una interfaz visual engañosamente simple, iDraw oculta un considerable poder creativo y potentes herramientas para el artista gráfico digital.

Cuando arranca el programa, nos presenta diversas opciones preestablecidas para empezar la ilustración. Incluye una página en blanco, gradientes, páginas de libro de notas… además de la posibilidad de crear un diseño inicial a medida y guardarlo. El aspecto del programa, con un elegante esquema de colores grises y negros, sigue una tendencia que también han adoptado otras aplicaciones de dibujo vectorial en sus versiones más recientes: por ejemplo Xara y Expression.

Para alguien que tenga experiencia con alguno de los programas de dibujo vectorial más conocidos, es fácil empezar a trabajar inmediatamente con iDraw. Las herramientas de que dispone son similares y se identifican con iconos familiares. Podemos editar varios documentos simultáneamente, presentados en pestañas contiguas, lo que facilita la edición desde un trabajo a otro en la misma sesión. El programa incorpora también una barra de propiedades contextual que ofrece diferentes opciones en función de la herramienta elegida:

El tratamiento de las capas en este programa se aproxima bastante a otras aplicaciones: incluye diferentes modos de fusión, lo que permite conseguir efectos muy diversos de forma no destructiva y simple.

Algunos de los múltiples modos de fusión en iDraw, con los que se puede crear una enorme variedad de efectos con los objetos vectoriales.

Los cuatro paneles inspectores de iDraw facilitan el acceso a diferentes características del programa de una forma cómoda y centralizada. iDraw incluye los paneles de apariencia, propiedades, bibliotecas de formas y el panel de estilos.

El inspector de apariencia permite cambiar a voluntad el trazo, pincel, relleno, etiquetas (que sirven también para indicar las dimensiones del objeto), texto y efectos especiales (opacidad y sombras).

Las propiedades que pueden cambiarse en el inspector correspondiente son la geometría del objeto (posición, tamaño, rotación, sesgar); alineación; herramientas de combinación de trazos (combinar, modificar, trazos compuestos); cuadrícula y lienzo.

Las formas organizadas en bibliotecas de iDraw aportan una gran variedad de clipart listo para utilizar. Incluye una considerable cantidad de muestras de ejemplo, y además podemos organizar nuestros propios materiales para tener un acceso fácil a ellos.

Los estilos son combinaciones de propiedades de los objetos que pueden reutilizarse a voluntad para aplicar un aspecto determinado, de forma consistente y cómoda, de unos objetos a otros.

iDraw tiene la capacidad de importar y exportar en una variedad de formatos gráficos estándar. Admite jpeg, png, gif, tiff y pdf tanto para importación como exportación. Además, también importa desde el formato vectorial estándar svg.

Aunque el programa es bastante intuitivo y para cualquiera que haya utilizado alguna otra aplicación semejante será muy fácil de utilizar, también se puede consultar un detallado manual del usuario disponible en PDF.

Creación automatizada de tipografías

Hemos hablado aquí de la excelente utilidad para el diseño de tipografías para Linux, FontForge.

Es posible vectorizar automáticamente con la conexión de Fontforge a motores de autocalcado vectorial como Potrace o Autotrace. Pero lo que hace Glyphtracer (una aplicación desarrollada en Python) va un paso más allá y sitúa a Fontforge al nivel de lo que puede hacerse con Scanfont y Fontlab, con utilidades del tipo de Scanahand. Glyphtracer toma una imagen de los caracteres (por ejemplo, una hoja en la que hemos dibujado el alfabeto). Detecta automáticamente los contornos y permite etiquetarlos. A continuación los vectoriza y los envía a Fontforge para retocarlos y exportar el archivo de tipografía digital.

En este vídeo podemos ver un ejemplo de creación de toda una tipografía en menos de tres minutos, utilitzando la pareja Glyphtracer + Fontforge.

Es evidente que para un producto final de calidad, en la mayoría de casos no será suficiente con esta generación automática. Pero como punto de partida, o para disponer rápidamente de una tipografía manual digitalizada puede servir perfectamente.

¡Caramba! es una nueva editorial que desde Madrid ha optado por una línea de publicaciones que da preferencia al humor.

Nos interesa la comedia absurda y el humor costumbrista, los chistes políticos, la sátira y la ironía. El humor blanco y el humor negro. Queremos ofrecer una panorámica del cómic de humor que se escribe y dibuja en nuestros días, el que realizan autores con nombre propio y aquel con el que nos sorprenden los jóvenes valores.

Utilizamos Internet y sus redes sociales como canal de venta y promoción de nuestros títulos, aunque también podrás encontrarnos en algunas librerías. Estamos poniendo en práctica nuevos modelos de relación autor-editor…

El servicio gratuito de blogs de Google, Blogger, incorpora desde hace poco una novedad muy importante en la presentación de los blogs que aloja. Se trata de las vistas dinámicas. Esencialmente, genera una miniatura o representación gráfica de cada página para ver el mismo blog de diferentes maneras.

Se trata de una forma muy fácil de disponer de presentaciones alternativas del blog. Para ver un blog cualquiera en forma de dynamic view, basta elegir su enlace correspondiente. Aquí está nuestro blog Acuarela, visto de seis formas diferentes:

Ésta es una edición especial y gratuita (con algunas limitaciones) del programa de dibujo de Autodesk, Sketchbook, que contiene los colores de los rotuladores Copic.

Evidentemente, utilizar esta aplicación, o cualquier otro programa de dibujo, en una tableta Cintiq es otra cosa.

Para aquellos que ya tengan Sketchbook, también está disponible como un añadido al programa existente. Está disponible para Mac (en la App Store) y para Windows.

Proceso de ilustración

Drawn es un magnífico blog que sigo desde hace tiempo (desde antes de que cambiara a su actual y lacónico formato en Tumblr). De vez en cuando los enlaces que publican se refieren al proceso de dibujo, pintura o ilustración que siguen diferentes artistas.

Por ejemplo, en una reciente nota se hacen eco de la forma en que Hergé desarrollaba las aventuras de Tintin (algo que se puede ver de forma más extensa y detallada en varios libros, como Tintin, the complete companion y sitios como Free Tintin.)

Estos breves artículos son una interesante referencia sobre materiales, estudios, organización del trabajo de ilustración, y proceso de creación de las ilustraciones y arte original, en muchos casos explicado por el propio artista.

Herramientas para elegir colores

Los selectores de color son una herramienta esencial para el diseñador. Además de las utilidades ya incorporadas en los programas de edición de imagen y de diseño, existe una gran variedad de utilidades específicas y, con una mayor flexibilidad, utilidades en internet que están siempre disponibles (y creciendo en número y variedad).

Además de una extensa lista de utilidades que voy recopilando en mis enlaces compartidos, por ejemplo en diigo, aquí están otras recopilaciones de enlaces interesantes. Lo bueno del enlace a mi cuenta de diigo es que dirige a todos los sitios relacionados, incluidos todos los anteriores, y cualquier nueva adición también aparecerá ahí.Muchas de las utilidades para generar, seleccionar, editar, combinar y guardar colores de estas listas son excelentes. Con ellas puedes obtener paletas de colores basadas en diferentes tipos de armonía de color, extraer muestras de color a partir de fotografías, etc.

Slanted es una revista dedicada a la tipografía y el diseño gráfico, publicada desde Karslruhe, en Alemania, por el colectivo MAGMA Brand Design.

Los números publicados hasta la fecha (15) son temáticos, dedicados a diferentes aspectos del mundo de la letra impresa:

El más reciente número de Slanted está dedicado a la tipografía experimental, y analiza el papel de lo accidental en el proceso de diseño, presentando trabajos basados en errores e inexactitudes, y tipos que derivan de procedimientos poco convencionales.

Plain Clip – a tiny Mac OS X application which will remove formatting from text which is on the clipboard. It’s designed as a faceless application (i.e.: no graphical user interface, with the exception of the preferences window), which makes it ideal for triggering it from a hotkey / launcher applications such as Spark or LaunchBar. For users of such tools, Plain Clip offers a way to invoke it with a shell command, which makes it possible to emulate a “Cmd-V” / “Paste” keyboard shortcut after the clipboard’s content has been converted.
Moreover, since version 2.0 Plain Clip has offered removal of trailing whitespace and control characters such as non-breaking spaces. Plain Clip 2.1 introduced another optionally text filter: line breaks can be removed, but at the same time consecutive line breaks are retained, so that paragraphs in the text are preserved.

Medio camuflado entre las carpetas y archivos de FontForge está la utilidad ttf2eps, que sirve, como indica el nombre, para extraer automáticamente todos los caracteres de una tipografía en formato vectorial postscript EPS. Obviamente, está pensada para tipos de símbolos, pero también puede venir bien para extraer, por ejemplo, las mayúsculas para crear clipart de letras iniciales. Una vez ejecutado en línea de comandos obtienes todos los archivos vectoriales correspondientes:

En este ejemplo hemos utilizado un dingbat de N-Plus.

Para ejecutar ttf2eps has de compilar el archivo descargado, por ejemplo con el comando

$ gcc -o ttf2eps ttf2eps.c

Una vez dispongas del archivo binario ejecutable ttf2eps, se trata de emplearlo en la tipografía que desees con los argumentos y opciones siguientes:

Una utilidad interesante, rápida y eficiente.

Voces con futura recopila la gráfica de la explosión de descontento que sacude las ciudades españolas esta primavera, muy especialmente en Madrid y con el epicentro, claramente, situado en la Puerta del Sol.

Entre préstamos de otras campañas anteriores y cosas discretas encontramos algunos carteles realmente imaginativos. El diseño puesto al servicio de la indignación contra las desigualdades y abusos que nos imponen como única alternativa.

Los carteles se pueden descargar a diferentes tamaños para difundir aún más el mensaje y por supuesto puedes participar.

El mundo del diseño se está moviendo un poco con este tema: también están iniciativas como Diseñadores indignados en Facebook.

Estos últimas semanas estoy jugando bastante con aplicaciones de medios naturales, y me ha impresionado bastante Artrage y su equilibrio entre potencia y simplicidad.

Artrage studio Pro es una versión muy mejorada con respecto a la versión estándar (o también respecto a la versión avanzada, llamada Artrage Studio). Hay bastantes diferencias de prestaciones entre las tres versiones del programa (como puede verse en la tabla comparativa del desarrollador de ArtRage (pdf).

Artrage es una aplicación de pintura digital muy poderosa y sofisticada, pero no te intimida con menús superpoblados y una invasión de ventanas y cuadros de diálogo. De hecho, su interfaz de usuario es atractiva e intuitiva. Aunque ofrece todo el control y potencia que haga falta para el usuario exigente, puedes concentrarte en usar lo que cuenta del programa: sus extraordinarias herramientas de dibujo y pintura que te hacen creer que utilizas pintura real, pinceles o tinta. Y todo ello sin ensuciar o desordenar tu mesa de trabajo.

Las muchas opciones que tiene la version Studio Pro en relación a las más básicas no aparecen de golpe, sino que elegantemente desaparecen de la vista hasta que te hagan falta. Y, a la inversa, algunos elementos que ocupan la pantalla se quitan de enmedio cuando sobran. En la esquina inferior izquierda tienes las herramientas de selección, transformación, cuentagotas, bote de pintura y texto. Si utilizas una herramienta determinada y llegas a las esquinas de la pantalla, donde residen las paletas de Artrage, desaparecerán temporalmente para que puedas ver lo que estás pintando. Libera el botón del ratón o del lápiz de la tableta, y la caja de herramientas volverá a su lugar.

Cada uno de los grupos de herramientas de Artrage ofrece varios estilos predeterminados, para imitar de forma convincente las técnicas de pintura y dibujo tradicional. Tenemos varios tipos de pinceles, incluyendo el llamado gloop pen —una herramienta que te permite esparcir rápidamente brochazos húmedos que recuerdan a las gotas de tinta o acuarela— y un spray de pegatinas.

Algunas de las variantes del gloop pen son ideales para detalles semejantes a una acuarela real. Los nombres de esas variantes, algo humorísticos, son de hecho bastante descriptivos, con nombres tales como “pseudo mancha de agua” o “tubería sombreada instantánea”.

Artrage es sofisticado en la forma que maneja la pintura, la forma de los pinceles y el grado de humedad de la superficie, todo ello digitalmente hablando, por supuesto. Imita con éxito el efecto de arrastrar un pincel que tiene todavían algo de pintura sobre pinceladas anteriores. Los efectos son algo impredecibles, como sucede con la pintura real al óleo, acrílica o gouache. Pero si uno quiere un grado mayor de control, no hay problema: se puede activar una limpieza automática o, aún mejor, emplear una jarra de agua limpia para limpiar el utensilio (¡de nuevo hablamos de limpieza digital!)

Hay una forma de pintar en Artrage que se adapta a cada artista. Por ejemplo, si te gusta emplear la espátula para mezclar y extender la pintura, puedes colocar algunos montoncitos de pintura aquí y allí y a continuación emplear la espátula para arrastrar la pintura por la tela virtual, de una forma análoga a lo que harías ante tu caballete real. Y, como con la pintura material, se te irá acabando a medida que arrastras la pintura.

Las capas son un elemento estándar en los programas de gráficos, y por supuesto Artrage ofrece todo lo que esperas de esta opción para organizar tu creación digital. Las capas, junto con sus respectivos modos de fusión, típicos de los programas profesionales, son muy útiles no tan solo para mantener el espacio de trabajo ordenado y limpio, sino también apra aplicar diferentes efectos de forma localizada y selectiva. Por ejemplo, puedes texturizar de forma no destructiva una ilustración o parte de ella, añadiendo una capa con la textura elegida y aplicándole un modo de fusión adecuado. Normalmente el modo de fusión de superposición (overlay) con una baja opacidad, de alrededor del 20% , funciona muy bien.

Otra forma de conseguir los efectos de papel natural o tela es utilizar las propiedades de superficie del propio programa: tipo de material y rugosidad de la superficie. Las propiedades de la superficie inmediatamente modifican la forma en que las pinceladas aparecen al aplicarlas, pero si es necesario puedes desactivar el material temporalmente para exportar una versión más plana de la obra, con todas las máscaras de transparencia que hagan falta.

Las pegatinas y las plantillas son otra forma de construir una ilustración, a partir de elementos preexistentes y clipart. El spray de pegatinas es una forma cómoda de llenas partes de la imagen con elementos repetitivos: muy útil para crear un bosque, hierba, una población, pisadas, hojas, multitudes, cielos… repitiendo algunos elementos individuales. Puedes crear fácilmente nuevos elementos predeterminados o importarlos. Los elementos predeterminados se pueden agrupar en categorías que faciliten su selección: por ejemplo, por tipo, temática o por proyectos. Crear nuevos elementos para las galerías de plantillas o pegatinas es tan fácil como guardar una imagen cualquiera en formato png en la carpeta correspondiente de predeterminados: stencil / sticker presets folder.

Si hace falta, puedes emplear los materiales de referencia que necesites. Los puedes esparcir en tu tablero virtual de ilustración, fijarlos en una posición, moverlos donde quieras o rotarlos. Los materiales para calcar son igualmente fáciles de emplear. Importa cualquier imagen y su transparencia automáticamente aumenta para que puedas emplearla como una referencia para dibujar encima.

Una buena aplicación de pintura debe disponer de paletas de colores y selector de color fáciles de utilizar e intuitivos. En la parte inferior derecha disponemos de un selector de colores con tres botones, en los modos rgb o hsv. El cuarto de círculo facilita la elección de un color determinado. Si hace falta un control más fino, puede especificarse independientemente cada uno de los valores , desde blanco al color puro. En las muestras de colores, la nueva opción de metalizado da un aspecto brillante configurable. El libro de muestras de color permite guardar aquellos colores que necesites para un proyecto determinado.

Hay muchos más opciones y controles para procesar la imagen y exportarla a toda unas serie de formatos estándar, a través de las opciones de menú de Artrage. La página de Studio pro ofrece información muy detallada de las capacidades del programa.

Si quieres ver por tú mismo qué puedes hacer con Artrage, lo mejor es visitar el sitio web y las galerías de la sección de comunidad. Hay también un forum con mucha actividad, donde encuentras ayudas, consejos y ideas de uso. También merece la pena el magazín digital ArtRageUs.

ArtRage es un programa asequible (63$ para Studio Pro, 32$ para Studio y sólo 16$ para la versión básica). Todos están disponibles para Mac OS X y Windows, además de una nueva versión para iPad con la que podrás llevar tu estudio a cuestas en un pequeño bolso o mochila. Además, he conseguido instalarlo con éxito en Linux Ubuntu con Wine (un programa de virtualización gratuito que permite ejecutar programas de Windows dentro de Linux, sin necesidad de instalar un sistema operativo Windows ni disponer de una licencia de usuario de Windows.). La mayoría de versiones de Artrage consiguen la calificación de oro (gold ), quesignifica que funcionan perfectamente en el entorno Windows mediante Wine.

Pese a la fama de sistema operativo más complejo, Linux-Ubuntu tiene uno de los sistemas de instalación de aplicaciones más sofisticados y simples para el usuario, a través de su intuitivo y bien organizado Software center. El Software center presenta los programas disponibles en diferentes repositorios de una forma intuitiva: clasificados por tipo de programa: gráficos, oficina, internet, audio, etc. La mayoría son programas de código abierto y gratuitos, y se muestran con una descripción y capturas de pantalla, más el enlace al sitio del desarrollador para obtener más información. Si decidimos instalar un programa se trata sólo de hacer clic y Ubuntu instala todas las dependencias, enlaces y menús. Desinstalar es igual de fácil.

Aunque los Mac ya se caracterizaban por una instalación habitualmente simple de los programas (arrastrar y soltar en la carpeta de aplicaciones), hace unas semanas, al Mac OS X Snow leopard se le añadió en su actualización 10.6.6 el App Store. Pese a algunos problemas bastante irritantes con el registro de aplicaciones comerciales, tiene el aliciente de aportar miles de nuevos programas y utilidades al usuario del Mac, y proporcionar una instalación simplificada.

Después de estas novedades, Windows se había quedado como el sistema en el que con frecuencia es más complicado y engorroso instalar nuevos programas. Al menos, y como alternativa, existe la posibilidad de utilizar un sinfín de aplicaciones portátiles, que son una auténtica bendición. Pero al fin existe algo parecido al Software center de Ubuntu en Windows. Y nos llega a través de un desarrollador independiente, no como una característica incorporada por el propio sistema operativo. Es Allmyapps.

Este gestor de aplicaciones funciona con .NET Framework 3.5 y será necesario instalar o actualizar este entorno de ejecución (el instalador de Allmyapps se encarga de esta actualización si es necesario).

La opción portable es también una buena alternativa, utilizando una selección de programas de Portableapps, Portablefreeware, Softpedia, Appstick o Liberkey. Si uno de los programas portátiles no lleva un sistema de actualización automatizada basta con sustituir los contenidos de su carpeta con la nueva versión (normalmente se mantienen los archivos de preferencias y configuración).

El suplemento cultural del periódico El País, Babelia, es objeto de una muestra retrospectiva de sus portadas. Son 20 años, a partir de 1991, y un millar de portadas, en las que desfilan importantes fotógrafos, ilustradores y diseñadores. Una visita que merece la pena.
